Preventing Mould and Mildew in Storage Units

Key ways to prevent mould and mildew in storage units are to choose a humidity-controlled unit, and to clean and thoroughly dry items before storing.  Additionally, you can use air-tight containers where possible. Desiccants (silica gel packets) can help to absorb moisture. Finally, arrange items to allow for airflow.

Storage unit mould prevention strategies

  • Use climate-controlled storage units

  • Clean and thoroughly dry items

  • Use air-tight containers where possible

  • Use desiccants

  • Arrange items to allow airflow

Fighting mould and mildew is a constant battle, especially here on the coast. These strategies put you in control, protecting your possessions and preventing mould and mildew from even gaining a foothold.

Climate-controlled units

These units, also known as humidity-controlled units, keep the temperature at a constant level. They provide the ideal protective environment for short- or long-term storage.

They are especially useful to even out temperature fluctuations, particularly as we head into summer heat. Why is this important? Because, heat increases the amount of moisture air can hold. Since cooler temps can’t hold as much, moisture is released back as condensation. We’ve all seen this happen when warmer, surrounding air interacts with the cooler surface of a cold drink. Mmm, delicious! But you don’t want that happening in your storage unit. Climate-controlled units prevent it.

Clean and dry

Always clean and really, really dry anything you plan to store. It helps to prevent stains, bugs, and moisture damage from mould, mildew and even rust.

Air-tight containers/Desiccants

Air-tight containers work well to prevent mould and mildew spores from moving in. Vacuum-sealing is good for short-term storage. It should be avoided for long-term storage for some items, as well as natural materials, like wool, silk, & leather. For non-air-tight containers, add desiccants to absorb any extra moisture. They come in a variety of sizes.

Airflow

Maximise airflow around your unit by ensuring there is space between items. Racks, hooks and hangers let you get the most use of the vertical space in your storage unit so nothing has to be crowded.
