General Winter Storage Tips and Advice

Storage Units, Lockers

January 24th, 2026

If you’ve made decluttering a goal this year, now is the time to get ‘er done! It’s winter; the time of year when activities slow down, giving us a little more time and energy to devote to organising our things and making decisions on what we want to do with it. Make full use of storage units this year to secure your possessions and free up valuable space for you and your family to live in and feel comfortable. Here are some general storage tips and advice to help you streamline the process and get the most out of your locker.

What to trash, donate or store

If it’s broken and unrepairable, trash it. If it’s repairable, it can go to storage until you’re ready to deal with it.
If it’s something you don’t need or like anymore, donate or sell it.
If it’s seasonal, it can safely go to storage until you need it. For example you can reasonably store indoor and outdoor holiday decorations, patio furniture, gardening equipment, pool accessories, and vehicles, toys, clothing and sports gear only used during the summer.
Consider too, those things around your house or apartment that you might be used to being there but really, you’re not getting any use out of. Things like gym equiprment you’ve gotten bored of, extra furniture that just takes up space, instruments not being played, or things you were given and want to keep for sentimental reasons, but don’t really need to keep 24/7 in your personal living space. You could even free up a room for most of the year while your child is away at university. Store their larger things like dressers and the bed, then set it up again when they come home.

How to organise and use your locker

  • Clean
  • Label
  • Temperature-controlled storage

Clean

It’s important to clean and dry items going into storage so they don’t sustain damage over time like rusting, staining or attracting pests.

Label

Label your storage containers and make a master list of what’s contained in each. This step takes a little extra time which you might be tempted to skip. Don’t give in. Use labels and make the list and you won’t regret it. When the time comes to retrieve things from your storage units, you’ll know exactly where to look. It makes the process 10x faster than if you show up and have to hunt for things.

Temperature-controlled units

Temperature fluctuations cause moisture which can damage some types of materials like leather, wood, fabric, paper and more. Choose a humidity-controlled unit to ensure your locker environment stays at the same temperature at all times.
