It Pays to Store Your Valuables

Not all self-storage facilities are equal. When it comes to protecting your valuables, you can never be too protected. That's why it's so important to know what level of security your self-storage facility is offering.

A good storage facility will have both visible and invisible security measures in place. Many of these will be basic, but should be combined with more hi-tech solutions. Gone are the days of high fences and a single watchdog. Today's storage facilities need much more than that, as thefts from storage units are on the increase.

How do you decide whether or not a facility should store your valuables?

Walk Through the Facility

This will give you a good idea of what you and your valuables might be getting into. Look for areas that are poorly-lit, posing a security risk. Are there dark corridors or fences in need of repair? Look for visible guards and ask if they are on duty during the night?

Inspect Your Unit

How do you enter and exit your storage unit? Is there a padlock that looks formidable to an intruder or do you think it would be easy to break open once inside the facility?

Alarms, CCTV Surveillance Cameras, and Reinforced Units

All these security features should be in place and in working order at a good storage unit.

Storage Facility Hi-Tech Solutions

Every storage facility will list installed security measures on its website. Besides good lighting, what else do they offer you? Is there a gate system? What about digital keypads that are secure and weatherproof for each unit? Is there a wireless system that lets you view the facility from wherever you are?

You can never be too careful with your treasured possessions so don't leave their security to chance. Make sure you check out facilities thoroughly and ask questions before you move your valuables to that location.
