How to Store your Life - Tips to Prepare for a Long Trip

If you are reading this, you may be finding yourself in a situation in which are seeking long term storage. Perhaps you are taking a long trip and renting out or selling your home before you leave. Whatever the reason, storing your life in self storage is an excellent solution for holding onto the furniture and other items you will want when you eventually come back.

Here are some tips on how to store your life in preparation for a long trip.

Find a Safe Storage Place

Do your homework. When looking for long term storage for your possessions, you want to make sure you choose a location that is secure and monitored. You also may consider finding a storage place that is climate controlled, making sure that the temperature remains steady. This is especially important if you have lots of wood furniture.

Clean Everything Before Storing

You will want to ensure that everything you store is cleaned before you put it away. Storing something with a smell or odour for a long time may cause that smell to transfer to other possessions. In addition, not being clean may encourage the growth of mold, damaging your items. Make sure you do not store any food or perishable goods.

Stay Organized

To save time and sanity later on, make sure you organize your possessions before placing them in storage. Use plastic bins to sort similar items together (these also stack very well). Avoid using cardboard boxes to store things, as these might not stand up well over a long period of time.

Downsize

Finally, if you are putting your stuff in long term storage, this is a great time to downsize. Only put away items that are irreplaceable, hold sentimental value, or you know you will make use of when you return. If something is not needed right now, it might be time to donate or sell it before you leave.

Storing your life doesn’t need to be complicated or difficult. Just stay organized; pack smart, and enjoy the experience knowing your stuff will be safe and ready for you when you return.
